John Mututho's battle with the drinks industry, following his brothers death, led to Kenya's first alcohol-control act in 2010. This story illustrates Africa's vulnerability to moves by multinational alcohol companies. The relatively high proportion of young people in African countries, plus factors such as relatively low consumption of commercial alcohol, high levels of illicit alcohol production and a rapidly rising middle class, create perfect emerging-market conditions. Research for the World Health Organization (WHO) in Kenya suggests that young people are being targeted, for example by production of 'alcopops' and clever advertising. Worryingly, at a time when minimum pricing is under consideration elsewhere, many African countries give tax breaks to drinks companies. Data from WHO suggest that although average per capita consumption figures (excluding South Africa) are very low due to factors such as religion, Africa has the highest proportion of binge drinkers in the world.
