First African venue for annual Alcohol Epidemiology Symposium

The 39th Annual Alcohol Epidemiology Symposium of the Kettil Bruun Society will take place in Africa for the first time. The event will be held at the Commonwealth Resort, Munyonyo in Kampala, Uganda from 3rd to 7th June 2013. Abstracts are required by January 20th, 2013.

EDISA Place of Hope

EDISA Place of Hope is a drug and alcohol abuse rehabilitation centre established in 2012. It's mission is to provide teenagers, youth and adults with life skills training and career guidance to protect them from the challenges of substance abuse. This is done mainly though holistic care, family therapy and counselling. The centre is also committed to substance abuse prevention through raising awareness of the dangers associated with drug and alcohol abuse.

Uganda - drug use ‘the new cool’ in schools

A recent study in Kampala found that 22% of students used and abused drugs; alcohol, marijuana, and khat (mairungi) being the most abused in that order. The report also found that no school was free of drug abuse. Dr Sheila Ndyanabangi, principal medical officer, said a drug control master plan was currently under way together with the Narcotics Control Bill in Parliament.

I am Fred Kasaato a ugandan a recovered alcholic who suffered from alchol abuse for over fifteen years joined rehab at the peak of my abuse where i was rehabilitated and have made it five years sober to date. In appreciation of my recovery i took on voluntary counselling later on joined hands with another recovered and set up a Centre - Recovery solutions were i am working to date as a Project Coordinator.
